TRIPLE FEATURE
Cannes Winners
With the 2009 Cannes Film Festival taking place right now, we figured we'd recommend these past Palme D'Or winners.
L'Enfant (2005)
Copied from the LA Times, March 24, 2006: For 20-year-old Bruno, everything is fungible, negotiable, for sale. He's got the morals of a sneak thief, because that's what he is. Do you like his favorite hat? It's yours, for a price. A hustler and panhandler, living fecklessly in the moment on the streets of a Belgian industrial town, he mocks those who have regular jobs and simply does whatever comes to hand. So when Bruno is introduced to his 9-day-old son by his young girlfriend Sonia, he does the expedient thing, the thing his whole life has pushed him toward: Almost without thinking about it, he sells the baby to an adoption ring for a thick wad of cash. But this horrific action, one that Bruno considers more or less business as usual, suddenly pushes him over a line he never knew existed. For Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's quietly devastating film "L'Enfant" (The Child) is not really about what happens to that baby. It's about what that act does to Bruno, about the brutal consequences of the sudden discovery that everything is not a commodity.

4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days (2007)
113 min
When the flighty Gabita decides to terminate her pregnancy - a crime in Romania from 1966 until 1989 - her fiercely loyal university dorm-mate and best friend Otilia, accompanies her to a hotel room to be "helped" by one Mr. Bebe, the only black-market practitioner they can afford. When the foul Bebe requests something far more precious than money for his services, the girls descend into a harrowing journey of the soul that is nothing short of shattering. Taking place over a single Saturday in 1987, the films holds enormous emotional gravitas. It evolves into a profound exploration not only of sorority in harsh times but of choices and responsibility when options are few.
Featuring: Anamaria Marinca, Laura Vasiliu, Vlad Ivanov, and Alexandru Potocean

Elephant (2003)
81 min
Winner of the Palme d'Or and Best Director prizes at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, Gus Van Sant's (Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester) Elephant takes us inside an American high school on one, single ordinary day that very rapidly turns tragic. Elephant demonstrates that high school life is a complex landscape where the vitality and beauty of young lives can shift from light to darkness with surreal speed. It's an ordinary high school day. Except that it's not.
Featuring: Elias McConnell, Jordan Taylor
